How to Get More Kilometres per Litre from Your Motorcycle
For millions of people in Pakistan, a motorcycle is the cheapest way to get to work, school or the market. Fuel is still its biggest running cost, and small changes in how you maintain and ride it can add up over a month. None of the habits below needs special tools, and most cost nothing.
1. Keep the tyres at the right pressure
Under-inflated tyres drag on the road and make the engine work harder. Check the pressure when the tyres are cold, at least once a month, and use the figure recommended for your model. It is usually shown in the owner's manual or on a sticker near the chain guard.
2. Look after the chain
A dry, dirty or loose chain wastes power. Clean it, lubricate it regularly and keep the tension within the range your manual allows. A chain that is too tight is as harmful as one that is too loose, so adjust it carefully or have a mechanic do it.
3. Service on schedule
Old engine oil, a clogged air filter and worn spark plugs all reduce mileage. A routine service is usually cheaper than the extra fuel a neglected bike drinks. Replace the air filter when it is dirty rather than waiting for the next service.
4. Ride smoothly
Sudden bursts of throttle and hard braking burn fuel you cannot recover. Roll the throttle on gently, look well ahead and let the bike slow down on its own where traffic allows instead of braking late.
5. Shift up in good time
Holding a low gear at high engine speed wastes petrol. Shift up smoothly as the bike gathers speed and keep the engine in a comfortable range rather than revving it hard.
6. Do not ride with the clutch half pulled
Resting a hand on the clutch lever slips the clutch and wastes power. Keep your hand off it unless you are changing gear or stopping.
7. Switch off during long waits
At a railway crossing or a long signal, switch the engine off if you will be stopped for more than a minute or so. Idling gives you zero kilometres per litre.
8. Carry less weight
Extra passengers and loads cost fuel. Remove things you do not need to carry, and keep heavy loads low and balanced so that the bike stays safe to handle.
9. Choose fuel sensibly
Most motorcycles are built for regular petrol, and Hi-Octane gives no meaningful gain in an engine that was not designed for it. Check your manual before paying more. Buy from busy, licensed stations rather than from roadside bottles, which can contain poor or contaminated fuel.
10. Investigate a sudden drop
If your mileage drops sharply, something has changed. Common causes are low tyre pressure, a dirty air filter, a dragging brake, a worn chain or sprocket, or a fuel leak. Have it checked rather than topping up more often.
Measure the result
You can only know that these habits work if you measure. Fill the tank completely, note the odometer, ride as usual, then fill completely again. Divide the kilometres by the litres to get kilometres per litre. Keep a note over several fills, because one reading can be thrown off by a different pump or a different route.
Then see what it is worth in rupees. Enter your mileage and monthly distance in our trip cost calculator, or follow the method in how to calculate your monthly fuel cost. For example, lifting a motorcycle from 40 to 44 km per litre can save a rider covering about 780 km a month roughly Rs 700 at a price of Rs 400 per litre.
